Obama Will Sign Executive Order To Close Gender Wage Gap
President Barack Obama declared that on Tuesday he will sign an executive order aimed at equalizing wages between genders for federal contractors. A second order will create transparency by forcing contractors to disclose to the Secretary of Labor the gender of employees, and reveal their relative compensation.
The president’s initiative is an attempt to make it easier for women to discover whether there is a pay difference so that they can retaliate against perceived discrimination. The push is part of a larger initiative which includes debate on the proposed Paycheck Fairness Act, which seeks to grant women more power in the workforce to take action against employers they believes are paying them less than their male counterparts.
There is no word on whether or not the federal government will also require women to work the same amount of hours as men in order to actually earn the increase in wages. Of course if they did then the demand to equalize wages would be unnecessary.
