In a new promo for Nickelodeon’s “Kids Pick the President,” the cartoon channel highlights the choices in this year’s election, including Gary Johnson. After the ad examines how the “major party” candidates are selected, it moves its focus to the many “third-parties.” However, it zeroes in on Johnson and the Libertarian Party as one which is on all 50 state ballots.
There are many positives to be taken away from this segment. First of all, the LP and Johnson are legitimized as not just another third-party and another candidate, but as unique among the alternatives to Trump and Clinton. Secondly, many parents watching Nick with their kids could for the first time hear about Johnson through such a venue. Also, while not many 18-year-olds may see the video, many of those children watching will vote in the not-so-distant future. After seeing this commercial, it is possible that they could decide to research the former New Mexico governor and the Libertarian Party even more.
This spotlighting by Nickelodeon is only the latest proof that Gary Johnson has already run likely the most successful LP presidential campaign in history. As we move closer to election day, it seems more and more likely that the Libertarian ticket will earn at least 5% of the national popular vote, granting the LP “minor party” status and significant amounts of funding in the next presidential election.
