The 83-year-old justice made the remarks during an interview with the BBC.
“I would say that we are not experiencing the best of times,” she said. “But there’s hope in seeing how the public is reacting to it.”
Ginsburg had kind words for participants in the Women’s Marches on Jan. 21, which saw millions of demonstrators pour into the nation’s urban centers to protest the new president
“I’ve never seen such a demonstration, both the numbers and the rapport of the people in that crowd,” she said. “There was no violence, it was orderly, So yes, we are not experiencing the best times, but there is reason to hope that we will see a better day.”
“I am optimistic in the long run,” she added. “A great man once said that the true symbol of the United States is not the bald eagle. It is the pendulum. And when the pendulum swings too far in one direction it will go back.”
Ginsburg has candidly expressed her misgivings about the direction of the country in recent weeks. During a question and answer session with students at Mililani High School in Hawaii earlier this month, the justice shared her concerns about a spike in anti-immigrant sentiment. She has also called for the abolition of the electoral college.
