What matters more than your talents for college

It’s easy to allow college to become all-consuming. As Jeff Bezos stated in the Princeton arts supplement, some things matter more than college.

Your education is obviously important, but it is not the only aspect of your life you should put effort into. There is a host of other important things too such as family, friends, and life experiences. In this article, we look at what matters more than your talents for college, and how you can expand your horizons:

Education is important, but not the only consideration

First and foremost, we must state that education is important. Without a college education, you may struggle in life. A college is a place that teaches you important lessons. Moreover, you learn a myriad of fantastic subjects such as science, history, and art.

These subjects are highly useful and can be used in later life. Don’t squander your education! There is no harm in getting help to write your research papers during college, but ensure you put in 100% effort and make the most of your school years.

Look at what else is important in your life

Whilst college education is vital, there is more to your life too. The following are 6 different things that you should give attention to also. Someone living without these things and concentrating only on their education is not really living their life in a balanced manner.

Family

Our family is ever-present. We grow up with our parents, grandparents, uncles, aunties, and siblings. These people help shape our lives and have a profound impact on our personal development. Do not take your family for granted. There is no guarantee how long they will be around for – the time is precious, and you should spend time with your family. As a student, it can be tempting to neglect your family – try to avoid this. Visit your grandparents. Make time for your siblings. Share with your parents about your life and feelings.

Friends

Family and friends – the dynamic duo. Friends are important and provide a different type of companionship to your family. Make friends. Share precious moments with them. Spend time in their company. Friends can help us through difficult times. Furthermore, friends can help us enjoy our lives. Everyone needs friends – being alone can be difficult. Friends can also help you during college and make your experience that much more enjoyable.

Enjoyment

A life without enjoyment is an extremely dull one. As humans we need happiness. We need fun and laughter. If you sorely concentrate on your college education, you may become morose and even depressed. Furthermore, stress and worry can negatively impact your health. Instead of spending time with written papers, do something fun – even if it means you must pay for it. Breaking up your college education with doses of enjoyment is vital.

Extra-curricular activities

Extra-curricular activities are a great way to learn something new and have fun. Moreover, these activities allow you to develop skills and abilities you may have otherwise never learnt. Maybe you could join a college sports team? Maybe you could join a debate group or take up dance lessons? The possibilities are endless. Taking part in activities such as these can broaden your horizons and give you extra enjoyment and something to look forward too.

Life experiences

There is more to life than college. Even at such a young age, you can still experience the world and have some amazing life experiences. If you get the opportunity to do something fun and unusual – do it, don’t pass up on the chance. Maybe you can go to a music festival for example. Or maybe you can take part in an exchange program or travel abroad on a college trip. These life experiences help you grow as a person. Furthermore, they create valuable memories that you can look back on in years to come.

Future job prospects

The main purpose of college is obviously to learn and develop a myriad of skills and knowledge. College also helps prepare you for later life. It helps you look at potential career paths and job prospects. Whilst studying and revising, ensure you take time to consider your future. What careers interest you? What job would you like to learn more about? Ask questions, take notes, and enquire about jobs. This is your future after all and work plays a huge roll in our lives.

We hope you have found this article enlightening. As you can see in the Jeff Bezos Princeton arts supplement, there is so much more to your life than college. It is imperative that you strive to find a suitable balance. You must give attention to your studies – this will help you progress in life and learn valuable skills. Don’t let college rule your life, however – you need fun, friendship and goals too.
