State Department Deletes Tweet After Being Swamped By Accusations Of Sexism

Guy Bentley

The Department of State has apologized after attempting to use Twitter to issue a bizarre series of recommendations to those enjoying spring break.

The department took to Twitter Wednesday to warn travelers to keep hold of their possessions and beware of being ripped off by scam artists. But one tweet in particular sparked a furious reaction on social media.

People pounced on the tweet’s clumsy wording interpreting it as sexist.

State Department officials tried to stymie the tide of outrage by assuring people that their tweet wasn’t referring to any particular gender.

But few were impressed with the explanation and the State Department apologized for and deleted the offending tweet.
