Shkreli Concedes on Twitter: Bernie Doesn’t Understand Economics

Martin Shkreli, who became the most hated man in America for raising the price of a drug used to combat HIV, has had no shortage of media coverage over the course of several months. From buying the only existing copy of a Wu Tang Clan album for millions of dollars, to standing off with Washington over securities fraud charges, Shkreli is no stranger to controversy. Politically, Shkreli drew surprise when he donated to (or at least tried) presidential candidate Bernie Sanders. Although Sanders rejected the donation, many wondered why a capitalist CEO like Shkreli would donate to a socialist who would love to nationalize his entire company. Earlier today, Shkreli gave us the answer.

The tweet Shkreli is retweeting came from Bernie Sanders, who cried out about the unfairness of the median female wage being lower now than what it was in 2007.

It’s outrageous that the median female worker earned $1,337 less last year than she did in 2007.

Sanders ignores that all median wages are lower since 2007 and this has nothing to do with gender.

However, some in Shkreli’s audience were confused. If Bernie is economically illiterate, why donate to his campaign?

There you have it. Although he may get a reputation as a ruthless, uncaring capitalist, perhaps Shkreli is something more – a generous, thoughtful philanthropist who wanted to help educate the uneducated before they cause untold damage to millions.
