Experiment Finds Using E-Cigarettes Significantly Cuts Down On Tobacco Use

Smokers who aren’t ready quit massively cut down the amount they smoked after they started using e-cigarettes, according to a study published in Nicotine and Tobacco Research.

The authors of the study highlight the fact that e-cigarette use has surged among young adults and current smokers, largely because most users want to quit smoking. (RELATED: Gallup Poll Shows Smoking Rate Collapsing As E-Cigarette Use Soars)

The research team studied young adults between the ages of 21-35 over three weeks, giving some of the group a placebo and others nicotine filled e-cigarettes. Participants were drawn from New York City and smoked at least 10 cigarettes per day.

Analysis of the groups showed the ones using e-cigarettes significantly cut back on the amount they smoked. Those who were using a greater number of e-cigarettes and were more willing to quit at the start of the experiment enjoyed a 50 percent reduction in cigarettes smoked per day at week three.

“A diverse young adult sample of current everyday smokers, who were not ready to quit, was able to reduce smoking with the help of ECs. Further study is needed to establish the role of both placebo and nicotine containing ECs in increasing both reduction and subsequent cessation,” the study concluded.

The study compliments the results of one of the largest surveys of vapers ever conducted. At the end of 2015, The Consumer Advocates for Smoke-free Alternatives Association (CASAA) carried out a survey of close to 20,000 vapers. The participants were drawn from CASAA members resident in the U.S.

Because the sample is highly defined and self-selecting, the results are not entirely representative of the wider population of vapers. But according to CASAA, the results are representative of one million e-cigarette enthusiasts.

Just over half of those who hadn’t quit smoking altogether said e-cigarettes helped them almost quit and 44 percent claim they cut the amount they smoked substantially. (RELATED: Survey Wrecks Claim E-Cigarettes Don’t Help Smokers Quit For Good)
