Everything to know about PMP Certification Preparation

PMP certification is a professional certificate awarded by the Project Management Institute (PMI). The applicants who meet the PMP certification requirements are then allowed for the PMP certification exam. PMI certification is the most popular and recognized certificate in professional project management in the whole world. Almost all leading companies and organizations prefer the certified PMPs for hiring. According to the recent international surveys, PMP certificate holders get 14%, more salary than non-certified project managers. Therefore the importance of certified project managers is quite evident.

What is the PMP certification?

PMP certification is not proof of your expertise or competence, but it is actually a justification for a specific level of knowledge in the project management field. However, PMI demands a relevant experience or education to meet eligibility requirements for becoming PMP certified.

Steps for PMP certification

If you are planning to become PMP certified professional, here are the steps for becoming PMP certified professional

1 Go through the PMP credentials

First of all, go through the Project Management Institution (PMI) Credentials Handbook. This book explains the essential requirements that you want to know about the process of taking the PMP exam. Also, it would guide you the ways of becoming a successful PMI certified project manager. It would take about 20 minutes to read this book.  And believe me, this investment of 20 minutes would start a journey of becoming a certified PMP. It would clear almost all of your queries regarding admission procedure and taking the exam.

2 Eligibility

It is quite simple to understand whether you are eligible for the PMP exam or not. If you have a high school diploma, an associate degree or any degree equivalent to this globally recognized degree then you are eligible. A maximum of five-year experience is required in the field of project management which means at least 7,500 hours must be spent leading the project management tasks.

A bachelor degree holder should have a minimum of 3 years experience in the project management profession which means about 4,500 hours must be spent in directing projects.

In both conditions, you must show at least 35 contact hours of project training.

3 PMI and local PMI Chapter

PMI membership really makes a monetary sense. A free PDF version of “A Guide to Project Management Body of Knowledge” is available at some sites. Even if you don’t want to become a lifetime member of PMI, becoming a member just for one-year benefits you a lot.

Being a member of the local PMI Chapter is also beneficial as it offers PMP Workshops. You receive bigger discounts than the membership fee. Local Chapter also keeps you informed about PMP. When you attend Local Chapter dinners then you get a chance to meet and speak to professional PMPs. There is also a likelihood that you meet some of PMP aspirants like you and you can make groups for studying together.

4 Signing up for PMP exam

You can start searching online certification programs for PMP to get registered. Fill online PMP credentials application and then submit to PMI for its approval. After receiving your application they will issue you a confirmation number. You can schedule your exam in the Prometric Website.

Separate scheduling is required because PMI does not hold the exam by itself. They use Thomson Prometric which is a testing company having testing centers internationally.  It also depends on your residence as you would have to travel for taking the exam wherever it is held. That is why it is necessary to schedule the exam in advance.
If you are planning to become a PMP professional and your exam date is in the next 3 months then it is study time for you.

5 Twice read PMBOK
