Veterans Fight To Fly American Flags In Georgia Neighborhood

By Henry Rodgers

Residents of a Georgia neighborhood are outraged after being told by their homeowners’ association that they can only fly the American flag 23 days out of the year.

In Cherokee County, Ga., The Village at Towne Lake Homeowners Association, informed residents through an email, that the American flag can only be displayed 23 days each year. “These guidelines help maintain the aesthetic and architectural theme of the community,” the association told Fox Business.

“Originally we were allowed to fly the flag, then we were given a violation for flying the flag, then we were told we couldn’t fly the flag at all,” said Army veteran and neighborhood resident Pete Rockett. “Then he [the developer] came back and said, ‘We’ll give you 23 days where you can fly the flag.’ Well, either the flag is ugly every day of the year or it’s not ugly at all.”

Rockett was not the only displeased veteran. “You don’t mess with my flag,” said Navy veteran Tom Wilder. “They are giving us 23 days to display it.We should be able to put up the flag anytime we want.”

“To me, you’re basically saying it’s a Christmas decoration,” Rockett said to Fox 5 News, adding that he will not be taking down his flag. “I don’t think I would be able to look at myself in the mirror.”

There has been no reports of any changes to this rule by the homeowners’ association.
