Serena Williams Fined $17,000 For Three Violations During U.S. Open Finals

Serena Williams was fined $17,000 for three code violations during the U.S. Open Finals held Saturday.
The first violation was for coaching, which was any form of audial or visual communication between a coach and the player, according to The Associated Press Sunday. Williams was also fined for breaking her racket and for verbal abuse for calling referee Carl Ramos “a thief.”
Williams was docked an entire game for the “verbal abuse,” The Daily Caller News Foundation previouslyreported.
She was fined $10,000 for “verbal abuse,” $4,000 for the coaching warning and $3,000 for breaking her racket, The AP reported. The fines will come out of the $1.85 million Williams earned for placing as a runner-up. Williams had told the Ramos when she was called out for the coaching violation that she was not receiving help.
“I don’t cheat to win, I’d rather lose,” Williams said, The DCNF reported. “I’m just letting you know,” she told Ramos. “I can understand how you made that thought, but I don’t cheat.”
The 36-year-old veteran tennis player lost 6-2, 6-4 to 20-year-old Japanese-American player Naomi Osaka.
