Mom Gets 38 Years For Murdering A Man She Falsely Accused of Pedophilia

Why We Don’t Allow Vigilante Justice 101

ENGLEWOOD, CO – A mother was convicted of second degree murder last week after she wrongly killed a man who her 4-year-old daughter accused of sexual abuse.

Forsythia Owen murdered Denzel Rainey with a baseball bat as he slept in an alley after her daughter lied about him sexually abusing her. Owen confessed to repeatedly striking him with a bat, causing a skull fracture, six broken ribs, a broken arm, lacerations to the liver, and a broken testicle. He died only hours after the attack.

Owen had been drinking alcohol and smoking weed that night, and according to police had a history of mental illness as well, having stabbed her boyfriend in 2002. Jason Siers, senior chief deputy district attorney in Arapahoe County accused her of engaging in “misplaced, vigilante justice.” Her violent behavior “escalated from a stabbing to a homicide,” Siers said. “Based on her history, I’m skeptical.”

District Attorney George Brauchler decried Owens’ attempt to plead insanity, saying: “Despite Colorado having one of the toughest-in-the-nation laws to overcome a plea of insanity, an Arapahoe County jury acknowledged that Owen’s claimed mental illness is no excuse for Owen’s intimate and personal act of repeatedly bludgeoning a poor and defenseless man and leaving him to die alone in an alleyway. She knew what she was doing when she murdered Mr. Rainey, and she will know what she is doing for the next 38 years.”

The case serves as a strong warning against people engaging in acts of vigilante justice based on the accusations made by children.
