Gary Johnson: Foreign Policy is Like a Game of Chess

Chess

by Josh Guckert

In his newest online advertisement, Gary Johnson makes the case for a more prudent foreign policy which takes into account the same strategies as one uses in chess. The Libertarian nominee states that few understand what American goals are abroad. Johnson asserts this is because when not elaborately thinking out future moves, it is easy to get lost.

This advertisement, which follows an earlier one about immigration, easily conceptualizes libertarian foreign policy for new onlookers. Rather than becoming susceptible to usual criticisms that libertarians are “weak” or “isolationist,” this new ad shows libertarian ideas as moreso “well thought out” and “without haste.”

With less than a month to go in the presidential election, Johnson is making his final case to the American people. Particularly with the likes of Trump and Clinton, who both seem far too willing to use the military, this libertarian message could easily resonate with middle-of-the-road voters.

The style of advertisement hearkens one back to a style of ads not seen since the late 1950s. Rather than appealing to baseless emotions in 30 second blurbs, Johnson instead uses concrete thinking and thorough explanations to substantiate his points. In a cycle where most are tired of the same old politics, this could be particularly effective.
