After graduating from Yale in 1973, he later enrolled in the University of Michigan School of Medicine where he received his degree in neurosurgery. A decade into becoming a surgical doctor, Carson became the director of pediatric neurosurgery at John Hopkins (where he was previously a resident) in 1987  . In 1997, Carson’s most important case involved separating a set of Siamese twins, affixed to the back of the head. This would go down in history as the first completely successful separation of type-2 vertical craniopagus twins.
