Bernie Sanders Made More Than $1M in 2016

Bernie Sanders, the “independent” Senator from Vermont, does well to give lip service to the poorest socioeconomic classes by promising them free healthcare, free education, and a nanny government that distrusts capitalism, all at the expense of that evil, but wealthy, 1% of of America. After all, the same 1% who Sanders blames are the reason for the perpetuation of the poor’s oppression. What Sanders hasn’t told his most ardent supports however, is that he owns three homes, and took in over $1,000,000 last year.

According to Sanders’ latest U.S. Senate financial disclosure, as reported by Seven Days, the Senator made roughly $795,000 for an advance on his best-selling book, “Our Revolution.” He made another $63,750 for his to-be released book, “Bernie Sanders’ Guide to Political Revolution.” Add to that the royalties he collected, $6,735, for his memoir from 1997 called “Outsider in the House,” and he is sitting at $865,485.

Seems that Sanders, without including his income as an elected official, nearly touches that $1M mark. This is a purely ironic circumstance, seeing that this income is made almost directly on the back of capitalism’s fruit.

Continuing his climb to a seven figure income, Sanders also received $2,521 (bring his total to $868,006) last year in royalties for his 1987 spoken-word folk album, “We Shall Overcome,” explained Seven Days.

Looking next at the salary of a federal Senator, which is $174,000 a year, though it does not have to be included in the Senate financial disclosure, brings the anti-capitalism, free stuff for everyone Senator to a seven figure income totaling roughly $1,042,006.

Seven Days reports that Sanders also was privy to an all expenses paid book tour, from November and December, paid for by publisher St. Martin’s Press. The tour took him to 12 states and the District of Columbia. The Senatorial financial disclosure did not require this amount to be listed for its filing, and Sanders did not provide it.

Seven Days also included in its report that Sanders is also the owner of retirement mutual funds held in his wife, Jane O’Meara Sanders’, name. The report explained, “the Senate only requires disclosure within broad dollar ranges — for instance, $15,001 to $50,000. So it’s impossible to ascertain the exact value of the retirement funds, but they are worth somewhere between $192,000 and $815,000.”

One would expect the “democratic-socialist,” as oxymoronic as that is to even say, to be transparent; not only talking-the-talk, but also walking-the-walk.

Unfortunately, when it comes to financial disclosure, Sanders is fairly tight-lipped and shielded. Even Politifact agreed. During the 2016 presidential race the fact-checking website noted that “Sanders’ releases are less extensive than anybody’s but Donald Trump.”

To be clear, this is NOT an attack on the income. In fact, anyone who can make money to care for their family, should be encouraged to do so to the “nth” degree. Instead, this is a criticism of the philosophy and transparency of a Senator who harps socialist tones and demonizes capitalism and self-responsibility, while scapegoating a class of people he appears to belong to.
