U.S. Falling Behind In Reading, Science And Math (VIDEO)

American Students Producing Mediocre Test Results

Students in the United States are falling behind in their reading, science and math scores. From a study of 34 countries, U.S. schoolchildren were 26th in math, 17th in reading and 21st in science. America spends more educating per student than any other country. As government has invested more into the education system, scores have had a correlational drop.

Students from Shanghai, Singapore and other Asian provinces or countries were in the lead, according to the test results. Jack Buckley, commissioner at the National Center for Education Statistics, the research arm of the U.S. Department of Education said, “Our scores are stagnant. We’re not seeing any improvement for our 15-year-olds.” He added, “But our ranking is slipping because a lot of these other countries are improving.”

Education Secretary Arne Duncan called the results a “picture of educational stagnation.” Duncan also said, “We must invest in early education, raise academic standards, make college affordable, and do more to recruit and retain top-notch educators.”
