Trump Attacks the Bush Slogan “He Kept Us Safe”
Donald J. Trump is known for attacking political correctness, and he is beloved for it by many of his supporters on the right. And though political correctness is often considered a left-wing phenomenon (such as being against “offensive language” when it comes to women and minorities), politically correct tropes also exist on the right-wing, often in relation to certain political leaders and their causes.
And now, Donald Trump is showing his politically incorrect bona fides by attacking the much repeated claim that George W. Bush “kept us safe.”
WALLACE: Something you said on Friday has stirred up some controversy about George W. Bush and the Twin Towers.
WALLACE: Question: do you blame George W. Bush for 9/11?
TRUMP: Look, look, Jeb said we were safe with my brother. We were safe. Well, the World Trade Center just fell down! Now, am I trying to blame him? I’m not blaming anybody. But the World Trade Center came down. So when he said, we were safe, that’s not safe. We lost 3,000 people, it was one of the greatest – probably the greatest catastrophe ever in this country if you think about it, right?

Trump’s “attack” against W serves as another shot at Jeb Bush and the Bush legacy as a whole. And it’s hard to argue with Trump: Presidents often are willing to take credit for good events that happen during their tenure yet are quick to shirk responsibility or re-write history when catastrophe strikes. Trump has taken it upon himself not to let a simple slogan “he kept us safe” white wash the history of the George W. Bush legacy.
According to RealClearPolitics, Trumps currently leads in the polls for the GOP Presidential nomination with 23.8% of voter support. Jeb Bush currently sits at 8%.
