No Good Deed Goes Unpunished

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – A student was suspended and recommended for expulsion after she took her friend’s razor away because she knew he was using it to harm himself.

Adrionna Harris took the razor from her friend and threw it away to try to convince him that self-mutilation isn’t right. But when she told the school administration what happened, instead of praising her, they suspended her instead. If Harris had not admitted what she had done, she wouldn’t have faced any trouble. Is this zero tolerance policy likely to cause other people not to be honest and come forward in the future?

“I took the razor blade, and then I threw it away immediately … I didn’t carry it around the school … I didn’t use it against anyone … I threw it away,” Harris said.

“I was shocked and surprised. I was very shocked that a student would get suspended for saving another child,” said Rachael Harris, Adrionna’s mother. “The school system over-reached absolutely.”

“I felt she did the  right thing,” said Rachael Harris. “Under the circumstances, she thought he would bleed out, as he was cutting himself, and there was no teacher in sight. It was a 911 situation, and there wasn’t time to find a teacher.”

Adrionna says she didn’t care that she got in trouble. “Even if I got in trouble, it didn’t matter because I was helping him … I would do it again even if I got suspended, yes,” she said.
