She Fought For Women’s Rights! She Paid Her Maid $3 An Hour!

Deputy consul general at the Indian Consulate Devyani Khobragade was busted by the feds for allegedly mistreating her female nanny. India’s 39-year-old deputy consul general for commercial, political, economic,  and women’s affairs is in trouble for allegedly helping to submit faked documents to the US State Department about how much she was paying the woman. [contextly_sidebar id=”0d5f2d8011087dd8c671235805e8779b”]

The NY Post reported that Khobragade is a self-proclaimed advocate for “underprivileged” women’s rights. Meanwhile, she apparently lied to the feds saying she paid her maid $4,500 a month, but she only gave her $573. The poor maid was only making $3.31 an hour in New York City. She’s lucky to still be alive!

Khobragade allegedly told the woman to lie on her visa application in order to come to the United States, claiming she would actually be paid a higher amount than she received. But the “civil rights hero” reportedly had the maid sign a second, secret contract that noted the nanny’s actual take home pay of $573.

Manhattan US Attorney Preet Bharara said: “This type of fraud on the United States and exploitation of an individual will not be tolerated.”

Khobragade was charged with one count of fraud and making false statements which could carry up to 15 years in prison. She pleaded not guilty and was released on a $250,000 bond.

Her lawyer plans to claim diplomatic immunity. “I have every expectation that she will be completely vindicated,” defense attorney Daniel Arshack said.
