Prohibition leads to crime and violence.  When you have more crime and violence, you need more law enforcement, more courts, more prisons and more bureaucracy. Since Richard Nixon declared the War on Drugs in June 1971, government has spent over $1 trillion fighting drugs. And they are still losing the war.

But this is still a losing issue for any candidate, even though a majority of Americans now support decriminalization of cannabis. People over 65 have the least support for decriminalization at 31%, but in the 2012 election they had a whopping 70% turnout rate at the polls. The group that favors decriminalization the most, 18-29, had only a 40% turnout in the same election.
