Cop Charged With Assault Who Stomped On A Man’s Head

Officer Joel Edouard was arraigned on assault and other charges after he was videotaped stomping on the head of a man being detained over alleged possession of marijuana.

Edouard and his partner attempted to arrest Jahmiel Cuffee after they allegedly saw him drinking alcohol on the sidewalk and possessing marijuana. Cuffee resisted arrest, and got into an altercation with officers, who subdued him. As the cell phone video was rolling, Edouard can be seen briefly pointing his gun at the man, before walking away. The officer is then seen walking back and stomping on Cuffee’s head.

Cuffee’s charges were later dismissed.

Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson said in a statement: “Police officers put their lives on the line every day to keep us all safe. However, this defendant allegedly stomped on the head of a suspect as he lay on the ground, which is unacceptable for a police officer. While a serious matter, this indictment should not reflect on the great work being done throughout the city by the vast majority of police officers who perform their duties honorably.”

Officer Edouard is on desk duty and faces up to a year in jail if he is convicted.
