911 Operator To Teen Whose Father Was Killed In Crash: “Stop Whining”

A 911 dispatcher has been placed “in a position where he won’t have citizen contact” after he told a teenage girl whose father was dying to “stop whining.”

Rick Warrick was struck and killed while changing a tire on the Baltimore Washington parkway. His daughter called 911, and begged the officials for help. “Can y’all please hurry up!” the teen asks.

“Ma’am, stop yelling, I need a location,” the operator responded. The girl says they were on I-295. “OK, 295, that’s good. We’re located now on a highway. Now that’s a pretty long road,” he said. Then the girl said there were two people who were hit by the vehicle.

“Yes, they both…”

“OK, let’s stop whining. OK, let’s stop whining. It’s hard to understand you… two people were struck, correct?” the operator said. The girl then describes how her father and his fiancee were lying on the ground motionless.

“Is there someone else there I can talk to, because it’s so hard…” the operator asked. The girl then explained how the only other person available was her little brother.

Russ Davis of the Anne Arundel County Fire Department said that it was a poor choice of words. “However, what he was attempting to do was to get her attention, to start ascertaining information from her,” Davis said. “It was pretty clear at that point they didn’t know where they were.”

The driver who killed Warrick did not stop and has yet to be identified.
