ABBA Singers Wore Crazy Outfits To Avoid Taxes (VIDEO)

Outfits Were An S.O.S. From The Swedish IRS

ABBA-early-costumesMama Mia! Capitalism may be blamed for a winner takes it all attitude, but for the singers of the megahit pop group ABBA, they took a chance on wearing their outrageous outfits for three reasons: Money, Money and Money.

It turns out that the crazy jumpsuits and glittery hotpants they wore weren’t just part of their act, they were for tax purposes.

“In my honest opinion we looked like nuts in those years. Nobody can have been as badly dressed on stage as we were,” singer Björn Ulvaeus said.

The Swedish Tax code apparently allowed the band to deduct the cost of their costumes only if they were so outrageous that they couldn’t be worn on the street. Ulvaeus had been in trouble with the government and was accused of of failing to pay $13.1 million in taxes between 1999 and 2005. He appealed and luckily won his case due to the exemption.

“I am of course very happy that I have been informed in writing that I have always done the right thing concerning my taxes,” he said.

Well we’re all glad you aren’t going to prison sir, but the fashion police should have arrested you and your bandmates a long time ago!
