Once upon a time, on a dark and stormy night 300 years ago, a fleet of treasure-bearing Spanish ships were sunk off the Florida coast. Now, those coins have been found, and are estimated to value approximately $4.5 million.
William Bartlett was fifteen feet offshore, diving in three feet of water when the coins revealed themselves like a scene out of a Hollywood film. His salvage crew assembled the treasure to find more than 300 coins, on the 300th anniversary of the wrecks.
“The gold looks like it fell into the water yesterday,” said Bartlett. His team, the 1715 Fleet-Queens Jewels owns the rights to the wreckage.
The numismatic value of the coins is astonishing. “Royals,” as they are known, were made for King Phillip V to commemorate royalty. There were only 20 known to exist until Bartlett found 9 of them in this haul.
Bartlett believes there is about $400 million worth of treasure left to find. The state of Florida will take 20% of the proceeds, which will be in the form of “voluntary donations” to state museums.
