Conspiracy theorists harass grieving Sandy Hook mother (VIDEO)
“Sandy Hook truthers” and other conspiracy theorists derive their elaborate fictions from a denial of human nature. Apparently committed to the idea that humanity is good by default, they immediately blame small groups of conspirators whenever a horrific act of violence occurs.
The Newton massacre – Adam Lanza’s 2012 murder of 20 elementary school children – was an especially terrible display of nihilism. In our society, it’s difficult for many people to accept that humanity is flawed enough to produce an Adam Lanza. Perhaps consequently, some conspiracy theorists insist that the massacre must have been a hoax and that the children who were killed “never existed.”
That’s what Lynn McDonnell, the mother of a Sandy Hook victim, learned last week. After a park dedicated to her daughter was vandalized by a Sandy Hook truther, another man stole a memorial sign from the park and then called McDonnell, declaring that the massacre was staged and – apparently – that her daughter was not a real person.
