7. Believes homosexuality is a choice
On March 5th, 2015, Dr. Carson upset many Americans during a CNN interview after announcing his presidential exploratory committee. At one point in the interview, he was asked if he considered homosexuality something people were born with or choice to be. Carson had asserted it was a choice, using an example that men “…go into prison straight — and when they come out, they’re gay”. Carson would later recant the statement he made on his official Facebook page immediately afterwards:
” [I] realized that my choice of language does not reflect fully my heart on gay issues. I do not pretend to know how every individual came to their sexual orientation. I regret that my words to express that concept were hurtful and divisive. For that I apologize unreservedly to all that were offended…”
Carson, though a staunch supporter of the biblical definition of marriage, would later state he is a supporter of civil unions for gay couples, and for the rights of the states to individually choose to define marriage by their own accord under the 10th Amendment.
