Pentagon Computers Were Hacked Again

Computers in at least one of the Pentagon’s food courts have been compromised by hackers and an unknown amount of employees’ personal information stolen.

Over the course of the past week, the Pentagon’s security agency became aware of the hack but is unsure how many people may have been affected, the Washington Examiner reports.

A Department of Defense spokesman told the Examiner Tuesday that employees who may have had their personal information stolen were notified about the problem.

A notice to employees about the hack said that numerous people reported fraudulent use of their credit cards after using them in one of the Pentagon food courts.

“These individuals had fraudulent charges to their account soon after they had legitimate transactions at the Pentagon,” according to the notice.

The cyber-attack on the Pentagon food court is the second launched against the Defense Department this summer. The first came in July when the Joint Chiefs of Staff were forced to shut down their unclassified email network for around two weeks due to suspicious activity.

Russian hackers were widely believed to be behind the attack on the email network used heavily by military personnel and civilian contractors.

The email hack likely came from a large phishing operation in which hackers tricked their targets into clicking on infected links.

Officials don’t believe that any classified information was stolen during that email hack.
