Popular Social Networking Site Will No Longer Censor Murder Videos

Facebook is now allowing people to view videos of decapitation on their website. This is a policy reversal from before, where they would block and take down videos that depicted brutal acts of murder.

One spokesperson said:

“Facebook has long been a place where people turn to share their experiences, particularly when they’re connected to controversial events on the ground, such as human rights abuses, acts of terrorism and other violent events. People are sharing this video on Facebook to condemn it. If the video were being celebrated, or the actions in it encouraged, our approach would be different.”

This sounds like a good decision. The world shouldn’t look away or have their images censored from the horrors of war. All too often the media sanitizes the news. Human rights violations can now be spread virally faster, thanks to this decision.

Consider the fact that television stations actually broadcast the brutality of the Vietnam War was said to be a major factor for the American people pushing for a stop to it. Maybe thanks to this, it can have a positive impact on policy thanks to increased awareness.

These videos may be gruesome, but its far worse than what would happen if we lived in a society where these images were totally banned, like North Korea. It would be far better for people to face the reality of what’s happening, so they can be equipped to deal with it.

Of course, current American foreign policy leadership would probably disagree.
