Glenn Beck Schools Trump Supporter on Social Media by Quoting F.A. Hayek

Micah J. Fleck

Recently a Facebook status update by TV and radio personality Glenn Beck has become a subject of discussion due to not only the content of the initial post, but the events that took place shortly after in the comments section below it.

Beck had chosen to quote one of his idols, Nobel Prize winning economist F.A. Hayek, as a way to “start our day” – no other reason for the quote was given. In the quote, Hayek delineates how and why Hitler was able to rise to power – not by actually being likable or promoting a legible platform, but merely by taking advantage of  the “decay of democracy” around him and appealing to the masses that believed he was “strong enough to get things done.

A Facebook user, presumably a Trump supporter, jumped onto the status and accused Beck of “Trump Bashing” and that Beck wasting energy and not doing “anything positive.” The angry commenter finally finished his tyrade by accusing Beck of having “lost your mind,” implying that making a post about Hayek was somehow inconsistent behavior for the media host.

Glenn Beck himself had the perfect response:

“I didn’t mention Trump. Strange that you would think he fit what [Hayek] was warning about.”

Good point. We can fairly assume that F.A. Hayek was much more in tune with cycles of society than this Facebook-based Trump fan.
