The communist professor at Drexel University put on administrative leave after blaming the Las Vegas massacre on white people has had no shortage of supporters.
Drexel University politics professor George Ciccariello-Maher received support from fellow professors, activists, and students following his tweets saying “white supremacist patriarchy” was responsible for the Vegas shooting and that the massacre “is what happens when” white people “don’t get what they want.”
The university placed Ciccariello-Maher on administrative leave following his tweets, citing threats directed at the professor. (RELATED: Drexel Puts Tenured ‘White Genocide’ Prof On Leave After He Blamed Vegas Massacre On White People)
“The administration apparently did not consult with a duly constituted faculty committee prior to imposing the suspension [on Ciccariello-Maher],” said the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) in a letter Thursday to Drexel. The school did not provide the professor with an end date to or scheduled hearing regarding his suspension, alleging that this violated Ciccariello-Maher’s academic due process, the AAUP complained.
Professors such as Sujatha Fernandes of Sydney University and journalists Katie Halper of Salon and Vice also signaled support.
Drexel “has cowered to the demands of the fascist right and squashed academic freedom,” argued activist Dan Arel.

The professor’s students have also supported him. A student claiming to represent a group supporting Ciccariello-Maher reached out to The Daily Caller News Foundation asking for coverage, but did not respond to subsequent correspondence. Nonetheless, students have expressed solidarity with the professor via protest, signs, and tweets.
“The Daily Caller is trash,” said Ciccariello-Maher to TheDCNF when reached for comment. Drexel did not respond to a request for comment in time for publication.
