Schumer Is All In For Trump’s Infrastructure Plan

Incoming Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said he supports President-elect Donald Trump’s $1 trillion infrastructure plan Wednesday, a proposal that’s been met with hesitance from GOP lawmakers.

Trump has repeatedly said the country’s roads, bridges and railways are in a state of disarray and need to be rebuilt. It’s an area he believes can be addressed in a bipartisan fashion.

“We think it should be large,” he said during an appearance on the ABC News program “Powerhouse Politics” podcast. “He’s mentioned a trillion dollars. I told him that sounded good to me.”

While approving of the numbers included in the plan, Schumer said he won’t get behind it if the language uses “gimmicks” like tax breaks for investors.

“We’re not going to oppose something simply because it has the name Trump on it,” he said, “but we will certainly not sacrifice our principles just to get something done.”

Republicans said they support rebuilding the nation’s infrastructure, but have voiced concerns over its potential to increase the national debt.

Schumer outlined a number of of Trump’s views, including those on trade, which he says align more closely with Democratic ideologies than with President Barack Obama.

“I’m more close to that than I am to Barack Obama or George Bush’s [positions] and so are a lot of Democrats,” he continued.

Schumer said he’s had numerous friendly conversations with the president-elect since Nov. 8.
