Last Chance for Mary Jane: Libertarian Presidential Candidate Gary Johnson

This past weekend former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson won the 2016 Libertarian Party nomination for President. This fall he will do battle with the presumptive nominees from the GOP and Democratic Party; Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. And as far as the presidential race is concerned, Governor Gary Johnson is Mary Jane’s last chance in the White House for at least 4 years.

Few candidates for president have been more forthright about their feelings on cannabis than Gary Johnson. After the 2012 Presidential race he even became the CEO of a cannabis company. He has used it medicinally and he will tell you all about it if you ask him. In fact, he’ll talk about marijuana at any time, in any setting:

That is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to videos where Governor Johnson talks about cannabis. And this is by no means a criticism of the Governor; I believe the normalization of discussing cannabis among the mainstream of society is one of the keys to eventual nationwide legalization.

My point is this: win or lose, Gary Johnson is going to be talking about weed whenever someone asks, and even in some instances when they don’t ask, as you saw in the clip from Joe Rogan’s podcast. Hillary is the least “progressive” she can be when it comes to even medical marijuana and Donald Trump… well, it depends on what day you ask him. He seems to be for medical marijuana if states approve it, but has also said Colorado has had “major problems” with recreational legalization (of course without elaborating on what those problems are). But Gary Johnson loves weed and he loves to talk about it.

While states around the country advance various forms of marijuana law reform, the federal government moves at a snail’s pace. Someone standing up in a U.S. presidential debate during the general election and saying “we should legalize marijuana and here’s why” could end up being the biggest thing that has ever happened to the cannabis movement.

Gary Johnson has a chance to be that person. And if he should happen to win the White House?
