Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid called the Koch brothers “one of the main causes” of climate change — the latest in a series of attacks against the libertarian businessmen whose political contributions threaten Reid’s control of the U.S. Senate.
The Nevada senator excoriated his arch-nemeses on the Senate floor Wednesday during a lengthy harangue against the menace of climate change.
“The overwhelming evidence proves that pollution is causing climate change,” Reid asserted. “Mr. President, no one has to take my word for it — including the multizillionare Koch brothers, the two richest people in the world.”
“These billionaire oil tycoons are certainly experts at contributing to climate change, that’s what they do very well,” the majority leader declared. “They are one of the main causes of this — not a cause, one of the main causes.”
Left-wing and climate blogs declared that the Koch brothers’ industrial endeavors produced a total of about 300 million tons of carbon in 2011 — a number impossible to confirm and likely inflated, given their inherent bias against the Kochs.
But even if 300 million tons is accurate, it represents just 5 percent of the 5.4 billion tons of carbon emitted in 2011 by the United States, according to EU estimates.
China long ago passed the United States as the world’s top carbon emitter. And when taken worldwide, Koch Industries produced just 0.89 percent of the total carbon emissions in 2011.
