PARIS, FRANCE – Shocking revelations have emerged that appear to show that the National Security Agency of the United States listened to millions of phone calls made in France.

French newspaper Le Monde is reporting the news cited from documents obtained from whistleblower Edward Snowden. French foreign minister Laurent Fabius requested the ‘immediate’ summoning of the American ambassador to Paris to answer questions about the report that shows that millions of phone calls in France have been listened to.

The documents obtained by Le Monde reveal that the NSA listened to about 70.3 million phone calls in France in a one month period from December 10th to January 8th, 2013. The NSA used several different methods to obtain data from the calls. The program code name was revealed as US-985D. The techniques used were titled, “DRTBOX” and “WHITEBOX”.

Le Monde reports that the documents appear to show the NSA is not just targeting foreign threats, but also high-profile individuals from business and politics.

French Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault said he was “shocked” by the claims, and that he had asked Washington for clear answers.

“I am deeply shocked…. It’s incredible that an allied country like the United States at this point goes as far as spying on private communications that have no strategic justification, no justification on the basis of national defence,” he told journalists in Copenhagen.
