The Swedish government, which calls itself the world’s first “feminist government,” has defended its decision to wear hijabs Saturday during a state visit to Iran.

Trade Minister Ann Linde got slammed by Swedish politicians for her decision to wear a hijab during meetings in Iran. The government said it wanted to respect the customs and abide by the law.

Politicians on both sides of the political spectrum called the delegation hypocrites for not refusing the hijab while calling itself a feminist government.

“It is ruinous to what is called a feminist foreign policy,” Liberal party leader Jan Bjorklund told newspaper Aftonbladet. “They could have signed the agreements in Sweden or in a neutral place. You can’t call it a custom in Iran … it’s about lawful oppression of women.”

Amineh Kakabaveh of the Left party said a refusal to wear the hijab should have been a no brainer, regardless of what the law says.

“It should be crystal clear for a feminist government, but instead they go about it like everyone else,” Kakabaveh told Aftonbladet.

Linde responded to the criticism by saying she won’t wear a hijab when she visits Saudi Arabia next month — a country where female visitors don’t have to wear headscarves under law.

The hijab incident comes just a week after the government attempted to troll U.S. President Donald Trump by signing a law with only women present to show off its high degree of feminism.
