These ‘Game of Thrones’ Fan Theories Will Blow Your Mind

We are nearing the end of Game of Thrones. We now know there will be only two shorter seasons left of the show that has kept us enthralled and enraged for the past 6 years. This past season was huge as far as reveals go; but we may be in for even bigger surprises in the show’s final two seasons. Here are the best fan theories out there. Some of them may blow your mind.

Obvious spoiler warning for season 6 of Game of Thrones

Tyrion Is A Targaryen

It may sound crazy, but many fans of the books & TV series have been trying to prove this theory for some time now. In the same way that fans suspected (correctly) that Jon Snow was actually the son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark, fans have speculated that Tyrion is actually the bastard son of the mad king himself, Aerys Targaryen.

Some fans believe that Aerys used his power as king to claim first bedding rights over Joanna Lannister, but didn’t call in the “favor” until after Jaime and Cersei were born. That or he used blackmail or seduction to sleep with her at some point.

There are a few other things that fans point to as evidence that Tyrion might have Targaryen blood running through his veins. Tywin always hated him and viewed him as a burden, which wouldn’t be that odd considering Tyrion’s birth killed his mother; but Tywin’s final words to Tyrion where “You’re no son of mine.”

Perhaps this was a symbolic gesture to disown him, or perhaps Tywin always suspected Tyrion was not his.

There is also the fact that Tyrion managed to calm Daenerys’ dragons, something that only Targaryens are supposed to be able to do. According to the lore, only Targaryens have ever been able to ride or tame dragons. Perhaps the dragons recognize the blood running through Tyrion’s veins?

The final piece that fans point to actually plays into our next fan theory…

The Three Headed Dragon

In the books, when Daenerys was in the House of the Undying she has a vision of her brother Rheagar. In the vision, Rheagar tells her that “The dragon has three heads.” This could have multiple meanings, but seems to be a recurring theme in Targaryen lore. Daenerys has three dragons, the sigil of House Targaryen is a three headed dragon, and Aegon Targaryen conquered Westeros with three dragons and his two sisters.

It goes further than just assuming that there will be three riders, with prophecies regarding The Last Hero, The Prince that was Promised, and Azor Ahai Reborn. All three of these fabled figures are thought to be the ones who fight against the Night King and his army of the dead. Currently, it’s unknown if Tyrion is The Last Hero, but it’s looking more and more like the other two have been found.

In the same vision where Daenerys is told “The dragon has three heads,” her brother also says that Aegon, his unborn son, is the Prince who was Promised. The problem is, Aegon was killed by Gregor Clegane and the only Targaryen to be born around the same time was Daenerys. This leads fans to speculate that she is the Prince who was Promised.

Melisandre believed Stannis was Azor Ahai Reborn and the Prince who was Promised (thinking they are the same person), but she was wrong and admits that. Azor Ahai is supposed to have a special sword called lightbringer, tempered with his wife’s blood and capable of killing the white walkers. Melisandre has stated that she prays for a glimpse of Azor Ahai, but R’hllor shows her only “snow.” After seeing Jon Snow kill a white walker with his sword, come back from the dead, and learning that he is the son of a Targaryen, it’s very likely that he is Azor Ahai Reborn.

If Tyrion is indeed of Targaryen descent, it is very possible that he is the third head of the dragon. The three even share many traits in common. All three are the third child born to their family, outcasts, had mothers die in childbirth, and had tragic love stories. Hopefully, this theory ends up being true, it would be awesome to see these three riding dragons together.

Bran is Brandon the Builder

After seeing how Bran was the cause of Wylis’s becoming Hodor, this theory has become very plausible. The idea is that Bran, using his ability as a greenseer, changed past events. It’s entirely possible that he didn’t actually change anything and he was always meant to use his powers at that time to cause that outcome, but he may not yet understand that.

Bran may very well use his powers to try and go back to certain points in history in an attempt to fix them, only to be the very catalyst that caused them in the first place. Or he might want to see how certain events played out and find that they didn’t happen the way he was told and may inadvertently cause them. It’s very time travel paradoxical, but if it’s true that might mean Bran is the reason the Starks even exist.

Brandon the Builder was the architect who built Winterfell, The Wall, and possibly even Storm’s End. He was also one of the first men and the founder of House Stark. With Brans time traveling powers, he could theoretically be that Brandon Stark.

It sounds crazy, but read this passage from the first novel where Old Nan tells Bran about Brandon the Builder:

“I could tell you the story about Brandon the Builder,” Old Nan said. “That was always your favorite.”

Thousands and thousands of years ago, Brandon the Builder had raised Winterfell, and some said the Wall. Bran knew the story, but it had never been his favorite. Maybe one of the other Brandons had liked that story. Sometimes Nan would talk to him as if he were her Brandon, the baby she had nursed all those years ago, and sometimes she confused him with his uncle Brandon, who was killed by the Mad King before Bran was even born. She had lived so long, Mother had told him once, that all the Brandon Starks had become one person in her head.

The line that “all the Brandons had become one person in her head” is what fans focus on. There is also a line in A Clash Of Kings where a character is described as having been told by a boy how to build a massive castle, and that boy was Bran the Builder.

The idea that Bran’s using a time travel-like ability to shape the entire history of Westeros as we know it is pretty crazy and a bit more Sci-Fi than we are used to with A Game Of Thrones, but it’s definitely interesting. If it ends up being true it would make Bran the most powerful and important character in the world. After seeing what happened to Wylis, it may not be as far fetched as it sounds.

Cersei’s Death

To discuss how Cersei will die, you need to look at the prophecy told to her by Maggy the Frog. Cersei has mentioned this prophecy multiple times throughout the season and so far all but one of them has come true.

1.You’ll never wed the prince, instead wedding the king.

This came true after a failed betrothal attempt to Prince Rhaegar Targaryen and her eventual union with Robert Baratheon

2.You’ll be queen, for a time. Then comes another, younger, more beautiful, to cast you down and take all you hold dear.

This could be seen as a two part event. Margaery replaced Cersei and did take Tommen away from her; but many think it’s actually Daenerys who will come and take everything away. Seeing as how Cersei just proclaimed herself Queen again, it’s very possible Daenarys is who the prophecy points to.

3. The king will have 20 children and you will have three. Gold will be their crown, gold their shrouds. They will all die.

This also came true. Robert had many illegitimate children and Cersei mothered three children that were not his. All three of her children have now died, just as she was told they would.

The fourth and final part of the prophecy was omitted from the show (thus far), but states that, “When your tears have drowned you, the Valonqar shall wrap his hands around your pale throat and choke the life from you.”

Valonqar means “little brother” in Valyrian, and both Tyrion and Jaime are younger than her (though a twin, Jaime was born second). The assumption is that either Tyrion or Jaime will be the one to kill her, but most people are forgetting someone.

There is someone who has the ability to look like anyone; someone who has Cersei’s name on a kill list. That someone is Arya Stark.

It is possible that Arya could use the likeness of Jaime to get close to Cersei and then kill her. In order to do that, Arya would also need to kill Jaime or have access to his body to acquire his face, but she probably wouldn’t have any gripes about that.

These are the fans theories I find most intriguing and if true would be huge game changers for the show. With likely only as many as 13 episodes left, we will have to wait and see.

Which theory is you favorite? Be sure to let us know.
