Weld: Clinton Campaign “Planted Rumors” That I Was Dropping Out

Weld

by Josh Guckert

On Monday, Libertarian vice presidential nominee William Weld speculated that the Hillary Clinton campaign had created the rumors that he would withdraw from the race so as to prevent Clinton from losing to Donald Trump. Weld said that he received dozens of phone calls and emails encouraging him to drop out after the false rumors surfaced.

Said the former Massachusetts governor, “Obviously the call had gone out from somewhere. And I’ve got to think directly or indirectly, it’s from the Clinton campaign.” He went on to say that the original rumor was “completely planted by the Clinton campaign.”

Weld continued:

I got 25 emails from people I don’t know saying unless you renounce your candidacy immediately, you’ll spoil this and elect Donald Trump, and you’ll go down in history as a complete pariah and your name will be hissing and a byword over the generations. And your family will be in disgrace forever. Then on Monday, they must have circulated my telephone at the office because I got 25 phone messages, phone calls — believe me when I tell you I wasn’t taking them — saying the same thing.

The Clintons are notorious for pulling out all of the stops to win elections. Though her campaign has yet to respond to Weld’s accusations, it would not be surprising if she and her campaign are indeed the ones who began the rumors about Governor Weld.
