Schools Claim Wide Leeway for Restraining Special Needs Kids
ABC News filed a special report that featured the stories of special needs children who are brutally restrained in their school environments. Schools believe they need a range of tactics and leeway to deal with autistic children who “act out”.
Some of the tactics include receiving electric shocks and choke-holds, as well as securing students in restraint rooms. Kids have died from some of these incidents. A surveillance tape from the interview below shows five teachers tackling and restraining a child in what they called a “therapeutic hold”, which killed him. Doctors blamed the death on “cardiac arrest while being subdued”.
This report was filed at the end of last year, but in light of news about schools that are running “Code Red” drills to terrify children with gunmen, this news is especially relevant.

if you did that to my kids… god could not save you..
if I even thought.. maan.. these people are devils.. to do this to a child..
I’d be in line with you, pal. Right in line with you.
These “teachers” need to die. Seriously. This is beyond reprehensible.
If from pre k until high school you are segregated in classrooms with some severely medically needy people crying all day and other noises plus para’s in your face waiting for you to wiggle the wrong way it would drive any kid crazy. My son got removed from inclusive education if he giggled. Or looked out the window. any reason for them to take him to the segregated classroom were they are denied education or even the right to look at a text book in Cody Wyoming
as the mom of an autistic child this is ridiculous. let me find out someone did one of these things to my child, i will go to jail cause i will hurt them… luckly my sons school calls me to calm him down..
My son is high function autistic but has behavior issues. He makes very loud noises and doesn’t like to be seated for a long period of time. And when he gets really excited he may grab onto someone. People who don’t know him or expect it may freak them out. He starts school next year and I am petrified after watching this and am now looking into homeschooling. His needs for socializing can be met in other ways where I won’t have to worry about bullying and physical harm. Very scary stuff…
