Frank Zappa may have described himself as a “practical conservative”, but that doesn’t mean he wasn’t a “small l” libertarian in many ways. In fact, he was very critical of the conservatives of the Reagan administration, stating in an interview:

“The biggest threat to America today is not communism, it’s moving America toward a fascist theocracy. And everything that’s happened during the Reagan administration is steering us right down that pipe.”

Zappa was skeptical of authority and indoctrination, and was critical of the mainstream media. Perhaps it’s because the movement was in its infancy for much of Zappa’s life, but if he were alive today, it’s a reasonable assumption Zappa would have identified with many of the party’s views, if not identified with it completely.
