Students Being Suspended for Opting Out of Common Core (VIDEO)

“Insubordination.”

While students purportedly have the option to opt out of Common Core’s standardized tests, some schools are hesitant to let students take advantage of it.

13-year-old Seirra Olivero was suspended from New York’s Orange-Ulster BOCES last month for telling her classmates that they could opt out of an upcoming test. Olivero says she was suspended for “insubordination.”

It’s easy to see why Orange-Ulster administrators were so upset: Common Core opponents have persuaded New York elementary and middle school students to opt out of the tests in droves.

In Sacramento, mother Katherine Duran was barred from school grounds for giving her 12-year-old son anti-Common Core leaflets to distribute to his classmates. The flyers showed students and parents how to opt out of testing.

Now, Alyssa McKinney – an 8th-grader at Whitesburg Middle School in Huntsville, Ala. – has been given an out of school suspension merely for opting out of the test herself.

Alyssa’s mother, Molly Overton, says she has already put it in writing that her daughter will not be taking Common Core tests.

The school has not commented on the suspension.
