Thom Hartmann invited Libertarian Republic editor Austin Petersen to ask whether or not politicians should be forced to wear the logos of the corporations that sponsor them. Hartmann brings up the subject in light of a petition to the White House forwarded by citizens worried about the influence of corporations on our democratic processes. Hartmann incorrectly assumes that libertarians are only for big corporations, but if that were true, why don’t big corporations support libertarianism?
The Russia Today host claims that the Supreme Court on Citizens United was a horrible decision. He believes that big money interests have too much power over our elections. However, he fails to realize that in the 2012 elections Republicans like Karl Rove and his American Crossroads PAC had a success rate of just 1 percent on $103 million dollars spent on attack ads. And big donors couldn’t help candidates like Josh Mandel in Ohio, George Allen in Virginia, Danny Rehberg in Montana or Todd Akin in Missouri. It appears that no amount of money can save a candidate who is more than willing to stick their foot in their mouth. So why after the enormous failure of big money in 2012 to influence elections are leftists still concerned with big money spent on campaigns?
So what do you think? Should politicians be forced to wear corporate sponsor logos?
