Democratic candidate Jon Ossoff tried to make the Georgia special election all about President Donald Trump but didn’t fare much better than former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton did in 2016.
Ossoff was seeking to replace former Republican Rep. Tom Price when he barely eclipsed Clinton’s performance, according to a Wednesday report from Real Clear Politics.
Democrats invested over $8.3 million in the race and thousands of volunteer hours but only received a 1.3 percent gain in the district from Clinton’s 46.8 percent in November of 2016. Ossoff earned 48.1 percent in Tuesday’s election.
Ossoff attempted to make the special election all about Trump. The young Democrat named his first official fundraiser “make Trump furious.” The leadership of the Democratic party quickly jumped behind the message with several high-dollar fundraisers hosted by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and New Jersey Democratic Sen. Cory Booker.
Trump earned the lowest percentage of votes compared to any other Republican presidential candidate in recent history with 48.3 percent. Former candidates Mitt Romney earned 61 percent and John McCain earned 59 percent in the district.
Republican challenger Karen Handel is expected to have an advantage in the runoff election scheduled for June 20 due to the fact that more voters supported Republicans than Ossoff at the polls Tuesday.
