Ariel Lopez and his four friends were charged with “criminal possession of a weapon.”

In February 2010, Ariel Lopez and four of his friends were playing in the snow when one of the young men threw a single snowball at a passing stranger. That stranger turned out to be an off-duty police officer, Sgt. Adonis Ramirez. Ramirez drew his gun and loudly ordered the five to kneel against a fence. The group was arrested and spent over a day in jail before being charged with attempted assault and criminal possession of a weapon.

The weapon was the snowball.

Ramirez initially said that the group chased him down the street and pelted him with multiple snowballs. Security footage quickly discredited the officer’s first claim. Now Ramirez admits that he was struck by just one snowball.

“I think he overreacted,” said Ariel Lopez.
