New York Representative and Korean War veteran Charlie Rangel thinks we need a mandatory draft. Not only that, but he thinks that now women are legally able to serve in combat roles, they should also be required to register with the Selective Service.
His argument? If more people are in the service, there’d be less wars. He also thinks that the problem with the voluntary service is that it’s disproportionately the poor who go and fight in rich men’s wars. But is that really the case?
Famous economist and Nobel laureate Milton Friedman once argued with General Westmoreland over the military draft. When Westmoreland stated that he didn’t want to command an army of mercenaries, Friedman famously countered, “Would you rather command an army of slaves?”
