Democratic California Sen. Kamala D. Harris’s delivered a commencement speech Friday and used it to describe a post-apocalyptic, President Donald Trump world in which “a late night tweet could start a war” and “young [illegal immigrants] who were brought to America as children fear a midnight knock on the door.”
Harris made the statements and others at Howard University, a historically black college/university (HBCU), according to Campus Reform Sunday.
“You are graduating into a time when we see a revival of the failed ‘War on Drugs,’ and a renewed reliance on mandatory minimum prison sentences,” said Harris. “A time when young [illegal immigrants] who were brought to America as children fear a midnight knock on the door.”
The senator told graduates that they could advocate for environmental justice, Black Lives Matter, and workers on strike.
“Graduates, indeed, we have a fight ahead,” Harris proclaimed. “This is a fight to define what kind of country we are, and it’s a fight to determine what country we will be. Let’s be clear, we are better than this. And you know what I’m talking about.”
The Daily Caller News Foundation reached out to Harris and Howard University for comment, but received none in time for publication.
