Cop allegedly tried to frame woman he injured after running a stop sign

MILWAUKEE, WI–Police are in the business of protecting and serving…their own interests. Last February, Robert Jackson‘s car was sideswiped by police, who then arrested him to cover up their ineptitude. Jackson was vindicated thanks to surveillance video, as was Tanya Weyker in Wisconsin.

Last Year, Weyker, 25, broke her neck in four places after Sheriff’s Deputy Joseph Quiles ran a stop sign and T-boned her vehicle, sending it spinning into a tree. While paramedics worked on Weyker, another deputy immediately arrested her for drunken driving, even though her injuries prevented her from receiving a breathalyzer test.

In the police report filed by Quiles, he brazenly altered the story to depict himself as an innocent victim, claiming he had come to a complete stop at the stop sign and that Weyker was driving while intoxicated without her headlights on. All these claims would subsequently be easy to disprove. Weyker’s blood tests came back clean, and she was driving a car with automatic headlights. Finally, like Robert Jackson and countless others, surveillance footage saved Weyker from being a scapegoat.

The nearby airport surveillance camera shows Deputy Quiles running the stop sign, and the Sheriff’s office had the proof two days after the accident. Yet the case against Weyker was not dropped. Instead, while lying in traction at the hospital, Weyker was bombarded with letters from Milwaukee County, saying she was responsible for the accident and would be threatened with legal action unless she paid up.

For almost a year, Weyker was facing her own exorbitant medical costs while trying to deal with her unlawful prosecution. When a prosecutor finally did look at her case after ten months, they declined to file charges. This was news to Weyker when she finally got the message. “No one called me,” she told Fox 6.

For his part, Deputy Quiles decided to milk the accident he caused for all it was worth. After admitting he had been responsible once the video surfaced, he was suspended for nine days for running a stop sign, but not for filing a false police report. He has also been on paid medical leave since the crash, even though he suffered no serious injuries. He’s also used the accident as an excuse to stop paying child support, and is seeking permanent disability pay.

Meanwhile, Weyker is left with medical bills that could top a million dollars while her assailant is sitting pretty. She has been seeking restitution for her injuries, and has filed a separate complaint against the deputy who arrested her. The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office declined to comment.
