Ridiculed ‘Mega Mao’ Statue Built In Village Devastated By His Famine Torn Down

A large $450,000 Mao statue recently constructed by a businessman and some villagers in a province devastated under the genocidal dictator has been torn down as it neared completion, after an outpouring of criticism and ridicule.

Chinese officials told The People’s Daily the 121-foot statue some called ‘Mega Mao’ has now been destroyed, because it was determined the “approval process” had not been properly handled, reported The Guardian.

Mao Zedong was the founding dictator of Communist China in the aftermath of World War II, was in charge when historians estimate a massive genocide took place, in which “at least 45 million people were worked, starved or beaten to death in China… from 1958 to 1962.”

The statue was constructed in his honor, and consisted of a likeness of Mao seated with his hand on his lap. It was erected in Henan province, one of the worst affected areas by the famine under Mao. The millions of deaths were in large part a result of Mao attempting to jump start state-led industrial production which in turn devastated the agricultural sector.
