Update: KLTV says that the officer responsible for the shooting has been fired after a veterinarian reportedly determined that the dog was shot in the back of the head.

An East Texas man was dealt a blow on Friday morning when his home was burglarized. Yet the worst crime that Cole Middleton suffered that day was perpetrated by the police officer he called for help.

After returning home from doing repairs at his family farm, Middleton discovered that his guns, iPad and wife’s jewelry were missing. Middleton called 911.

A deputy arrived to investigate and immediately shot Middleton’s barking cow dog, Candy, in the head. “She’s barking when he pulls into the driveway… He gets out of his car and shoots my dog in my front yard,” says Middleton.

The gunshot did not kill Candy. As his dog lay suffering, Middleton says, “I begged and pleaded with him to please shoot her again because I don’t have any firearms. They got stolen. He went and got in his vehicle and backed out of my driveway.” The officer drove away, willfully allowing Middleton’s dog to suffer.

“And then I had to do the unthinkable, the otherwise unthinkable,” Middleton wept. “I had to kill my dog with my bare hands and put her out of her suffering, praying for this to be over with.”

More police officers soon arrived and found Middleton covered in his dog’s blood. The officers drew their tasers and pistols. “They then asked well whose blood is on your shirt. That is the blood of my dog that I was holding because this deputy pulled up and shot her in my yard,” says Middleton.

According to the ASPCA, police departments commonly “set a very low threshold for justifying the killing of dogs. In virtually all cases we have examined, internal reviews of dog shootings have ruled them to be justifiable.” The society also reports that “Many of these incidents involve multiple shots fired and many do not result in the dog’s swift, humane death.”
