Gun Violence is on the Decline…Except in Gun Free Zones

Donald Trump has proposed the end of “gun-free zones” since becoming the President-Elect. Whether or not he keeps that promise is still up in the air. But it would be wonderful if he does work towards that. Gun-free zones only limit law-abiding gun-owners from carrying their firearms, not criminals. Therefore, gun-free zones ultimately put people in danger. According to a study by Pew Research Center, gun homicide rate dropped from 7.0 per 100,000 in 1993 down to 3.4 per 100,000 in 2014. But how many of the remaining gun homicides are done within the premises of a “gun free zone”?

According to FBI statistics, within 2014 and 2015, there were 40 active shooter situations. If you look through all of the locations listed, you will find that every last one of them were places that would be “gun-free” zones. For example, it states 15 of which were businesses that tend to be gun-free, as in supermarkets, offices, malls, etc. As well, 6 listed were schools, either preK-12 or higher education. Only 8 out of the 40 active shooter situations were in either a residence or open area.

What would be ideal for both conservatives and libertarians is a complete end of regulation on our firearms. Our permit to carry our firearms should be the 2nd Amendment, period. But a war for your rights is not won in a day. It takes many battles, and the end of a “gun-free zone” would be a wonderful start. I still have my reservations with our President-Elect. I will continue to take all his promises, especially with our 2nd Amendment, with a grain of salt. We must remember, this is the guy that agreed with Democrats about the “No Fly, No Buy” backdoor ban.
