Teenage nerf gun battle causes panic in the streets, police call (VIDEO)

Teenage nerf gun battle causes panic in the streets.

“It did scare a number of people that were in the area,” said Wasau police department Capt. Ben Bliven. “They thought that there were actually firearms being drawn and pointed at other people, which is very concerning for citizens in the community.”

Wasau residents told WAOW-TV that they were alarmed when a small group of high school seniors began running around their neighborhood shooting one another with plastic nerf guns. Apparently unable to distinguish brightly colored plastic toys from actual weapons, frenzied residents began to call the police to report the menacing teenage gunmen.

“Our dispatch said there were three people with firearms, so we had to respond appropriately,” said Bliven.

Officers say they had no idea that the firearms were actually nerf guns until they had arrested all of the teenage participants at gunpoint. The six students were ticketed for disorderly conduct. Some have since been placed on athletic probation.

Last year, a 6-year-old South Carolina girl was expelled from school for possessing a plastic toy gun – and threatened with “the criminal charge of trespassing” if she ever returned.
