Marijuana legalization is not igniting a smoking crisis among young Americans, according to a study showing steady declines in youth pot use over more than a decade.

Researchers at the U.S. National Institute on Drug Abuse and the Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration investigated how often kids ages 12 to 17 used weed between 2002 and 2014. The study, published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, revealed that the prevalence of past-year marijuana use for youth dropped 17 percent over the recorded period, NORML reported Tuesday.

The researchers also found a 25 percent decline in the prevalence of youth abusing marijuana, which they refer to as problematic cannabis use.

“In the United States, compared to 2002, even after adjusting for covariates, cannabis use decreased among youth during 2005-2014, and cannabis use disorder declined among youth cannabis users,” the authors concluded. “Associations between declines in tobacco use and decreased cannabis use suggest the importance of tobacco use control and prevention among youth.”

The authors say the findings are in line with previous studies showing that youth marijuana use is not increasing in correlation with expanding legalization laws.

Marijuana accessibility is at a record low for 8th and 10th graders and has stayed roughly stagnant among students in 12th grade, according to the annual Monitoring the Future survey. Marijuana use fell slightly among 8th and 10th graders, while remaining the same for high school seniors in 2016.

Many health experts tied to the Monitoring the Future survey also believe that the drop in youth cannabis use can be attributed to the overall decline in the youth smoking rate. Only 1.8 percent of high school seniors said they smoked half a pack or more a day in 2016, down from 11 percent in 1991.

Members of the marijuana industry also argue that state legalization laws are helping make the product more difficult to obtain by placing it under the regulatory purview of state governments.

Medical marijuana is legal in 29 states and Washington, D.C., where it is also legal for recreational use. Voters in Maine, Nevada, California and Massachusetts all approved measures to legalize marijuana for recreational use on Election Day, joining five other states. Nearly one in five Americans now have access to legal pot.

If prohibitionists really want to protect families from a drug proven to destroy lives and families, then they should be up in arms, protesting the legality of booze.

Alcohol is the number one cause for traffic fatalities and domestic violence by a huge landslide.

Alcohol is also infused into literally a ton of deserts and fruity drinks that “The Children” find appealing.

Why doesn’t the much more harmful yet perfectly legal use of alcohol concern you prohibitionists more than relatively benign marijuana? It should.

      Regarding “The Children”,

Let’s not use “The Children” as an excuse to prohibit and criminalize adult use of a natural plant far less dangerous than perfectly legal alcohol because nobody condones child use, and this is about allowing adults only to choose marijuana.

It’s our responsibility as parents by to educate our children on drug use. It’s not the government’s job to force Draconian Marijuana Laws upon every adult citizen under the guise of protecting “The Children”.

What message are we sending our children when it is easier for them to obtain marijuana now with it being illegal than it is for them to buy alcohol?

It doesn’t take the intellect of a genius to understand that stores card kids for I.D. Thugs and gang members do not. They also push the real hard drugs on children. Stores do not.

Marijuana legalization will make it harder for children to obtain it.

What message does it send our children when several Presidents of The United States themselves, alongside a long list of successful people openly admit regular pot use at one time or another in their lives?

While we tell our kids how it will ruin their futures, and then ensure so, by allowing our government to to jail our children and give them permanent criminal records when they get caught with a little Marijuana. Especially, if they are the wrong skin color or from the “wrong neighborhood”. Which in turn, ruins their chances of employment for life.

The Prohibition of Marijuana is the wrong message to send our children while we glorify, advertise and promote the much more dangerous use of alcohol like it’s an all American pastime.

The worst thing about marijuana and our children is what happens to them when they get caught up in the criminal justice system due to it’s prohibition.

Protect “The Children” and Our Neighborhoods Through The Legalization and Regulation of Marijuana Nationwide!

There is absolutely no doubt now that the majority of Americans want to completely legalize marijuana nationwide. Our numbers grow on a daily basis.

The prohibitionist view on marijuana is the viewpoint of a minority and rapidly shrinking percentage of Americans. It is based upon decades of lies and propaganda.

Each and every tired old lie they have propagated has been thoroughly proven false by both science and society.

Their tired old rhetoric no longer holds any validity. The vast majority of Americans have seen through the sham of marijuana prohibition in this day and age. The number of prohibitionists left shrinks on a daily basis.

With their credibility shattered, and their not so hidden agendas visible to a much wiser public, what’s left for a marijuana prohibitionist to do?

Maybe, just come to terms with the fact that Marijuana Legalization Nationwide is an inevitable reality that’s approaching much sooner than prohibitionists think, and there is nothing they can do to stop it!

Legalize Nationwide!…and Support All Marijuana Legalization Efforts!

        Jack Ripper,

Marijuana is not “dope”. By calling it that, you only make it that much easier for everyone to see your ignorance. Along with the anger and resentment you hold towards this natural plant and it’s consumers.

If anything, you can say that booze is the real “dope” because it makes people do the dumbest things, often become violent, and then blackout and not remember all the havoc caused by the booze, like true “dopes”.

Go ask your local street drug dealer for some “dope”.

You’re not going to get marijuana, guaranteed!

Name calling and stereotyping. It’s all that prohibitionists have left to offer society since virtually every piece of marijuana propaganda out there has been thoroughly debunked, and completely dismissed by a smarter than prohibitionists thought public.

Nobody can provide a real reason to continue the “War on Marijuana” because there isn’t one.

You know, a little live and let live goes a real long way towards ensuring a very long, stress and anger free life.

If somebody doesn’t approve of marijuana, then by all means, that person shouldn’t consume marijuana. Nobody is ever going to force anybody to consume marijuana that doesn’t desire to. Plain and simple. Problem solved.

If I were you and worried so much about “saving all of us” adults from ourselves, under the guise of protecting “The Children”, well then, I’d begin with the deadliest drug, which causes more broken homes, domestic violence, and traffic fatalities than all other drugs, combined, which is alcohol.

Yet alcohol remains perfectly legal, widely accepted, endlessly advertised, even glorified as an All American pastime.

Why doesn’t the much more prevalent, more widely abused, use of alcohol concern you much more than marijuana which is a relatively benign drug when compared to all other ones?

Protesting the legality of booze should be your number one priority if you are truly so concerned about “saving us all” from ourselves.
Let’s allow other hard-working, tax paying adults to make their own choices about marijuana.

The government has no business attempting to legislate morality by creating victim-less marijuana “crimes” because it simply doesn’t work and has already cost the taxpayers a fortune.

What we certainly don’t need are anymore people who feel justified in appointing themselves to be self-deputized morality police.

We are very capable of choosing for ourselves if we want to consume Marijuana, a far less dangerous choice over alcohol, and we definitely don’t need anyone dictating how we live our own lives.

We can’t lock up everyone who does things you don’t personally approve of.

        B.T.W-

Legalizing Marijuana will not create a massive influx of marijuana impaired drivers on our roads.

It will not create an influx of professionals (doctors, pilots, bus drivers, etc..) under the influence on the job either.

This is a prohibitionist propaganda scare tactic.

Truth: Responsible drivers don’t drive while impaired on any substance period!

Irresponsible drivers are already on our roads, and they will drive while impaired regardless of their drug of choice’s legality.

Therefore, legalizing marijuana will have little impact on the amount of marijuana impaired drivers on our roads.

The same thing applies to people being under the influence of marijuana on the job.

Responsible people do not go to work impaired, period. Regardless of their drug of choice’s legality.

Contrary to what prohibitionists are so desperately trying to get the public to believe wholeheartedly and without question, legalizing marijuana IS NOT adding anything new into our society that wasn’t always there and widely available already.

Marijuana has been ingrained within our society since the days of our founding fathers and part of human culture since biblical times, for thousands of years.

So, since marijuana has always been with us and humans already have thousands upon thousands of years worth of experience with marijuana, what great calamities and “Doomsday Scenarios” do prohibitionists really think will happen now due to current legalization efforts that have never ever happened before in all human history?

        Legalize Nationwide!
